A Laptop for Kids? About PeeWee Pivot Laptop!
Netbooks are a popular choice for people buying laptop computers, and they seem sized appropriately for kids.
A netbook is a small, lightweight laptop without an optical drive that is designed for light duties such as Internet surfing, checking e-mail and word processing.
The PeeWee Pivot Tablet Laptop ($599, www.peeweepc.com) is a pretty full-featured netbook aimed squarely at kids.
So, if netbooks are a dime a dozen, what makes the PeeWee Pivot a good choice for kids?
The Pivot looks like most netbooks, but its 8.9-inch LCD (1024 by 600 pixels) is a touch screen that rotates and pivots to close in tablet mode (think Etch-a-Sketch).
Input methods for the PeeWee Pivot include the trackpad, a finger or a stylus.
It’s drop- and spill-resistant. There is a rugged outer case (drop-tested from 20 inches) and a water-resistant keyboard. There’s also a plastic carrying handle that can be removed for older kids.
The Pivot ships with Windows XP Home installed with a Disney theme and 10 pre-installed software titles that are age-appropriate for your child.
When you place your order, you can specify pre-kindergarten, early-elementary or upper- elementary software bundles. You can also change the XP theme from among half a dozen Disney or Star Trek themes.
Also included is a security software suite so parents can control what kids can access online and set time limits for daily use.
Software includes Microsoft Works 9.0, ArtRage 2 (a painting program), MyScript Stylus (handwriting recognition), and an e-book reader and PDF viewer.
The Pivot has an Intel Atom processor (1.6 GHz), one gigabyte of RAM, a 60- gigabyte hard drive, an SD card reader, two USB 2.0 ports, 802.11 b/g/n wireless connectivity, an ethernet jack, a VGA port and jacks for headphones and a microphone.
There’s also a Web camera that rotates 180 degrees and a built-in microphone for video chats.
Upgrade options to the $599 base Pivot include Windows XP Pro ($186), your choice of Microsoft Office suite (starting at $186) and a bump to two gigabytes of RAM ($89).
The PeeWee Pivot Tablet is designed for your kids, but it’s a serious laptop. It has most of the features a grown-up needs to get some work done on vacation or as a second computer.
A one-year warranty is included (a three-year warranty adds $98) and a charity donation – you can choose from a list of three – is made for each computer sold.
I liked the Pivot’s response times and bright screen. I’m afraid my fingers are too big to do any serious typing on the built-in keyboard, but I’m sure it’s perfect for young fingers.
Quite honestly, while I love the small form factor of netbooks, the keyboard size is what keeps me from buying one.
I’m not sure I’d feel comfortable leaving a normal netbook with a 3-year-old child, but the PeeWee Pivot should be able to stand up to more than a little abuse.PeeWee Pivot Tablet Laptop
Pros: Full-featured, rugged, touch screen, parental-control software.
Cons: Too small for my fingers, but I’m not the target market.
Bottom line: Matches up well with similar netbooks from other manufacturers, and the kid-specific features make it a great first computer for your children.
Symantec Sep 11 Error code 11 or whitelist failure errors
After my system rebooted following a MS patch install I noticed that my symantec protection was off on my Sep11. I have Vista 64bit and tried to repair this issue. I found some information on a Symantec site other forums etc. The option that worked was to into add/remove software and do a repair on the entire install of Sep11. After another reboot all seem to have returned to normal for me. Anyway, let me know if you see something else or none of these will work for youw. Good Luck!!
Symantec Endpoint Protection error: PTS (or TruScan) has generated an error: code 11: description: Whitelist Failure
Question/Issue:
PTS has generated an error: code 11: description: Whitelist Failure
Symptoms:
By default, the error appears one hour after the Symantec Endpoint Protection service is started. If the Heuristics and Proactive threat detection scan frequency is changed from the
default frequency then the error will occur when the initial Proactive Threat scan (PTS) starts. In some cases, Proactive Threat Protection (PTP) shows as disabled and Awaiting Updates.
Cause:
The Whitelist Failure error occurs when PTP is installed and the definitions have not properly propagated to the PTP definition location on the client computer.
Solution:
Validate the presence of the PTP definitions
1. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\SyKnAppS\
2. If this folder contains 3 empty folders and 2 files (patch25.dll and SyKnAppS.dll), then the client has not retrieved and applied the PTP definitions.
3. Verify that the client can contact its source for definitions.
o Run LiveUpdate on the Symantec Endpoint Protection client.
o If the Symantec Endpoint Protection client is not allowed to run LiveUpdate, and retrieves definitions from the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager then verify that the client is communicating properly
with the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager server.
o If the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager does not pull down the whitelist content until after the client is installed, the client will not be able to retrieve the content. Look for the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\Inetpub\content\{812CD25E-1049-4086-9DDD-A4FAE649FBDF}\
If the {812CD25E-1049-4086-9DDD-A4FAE649FBDF} moniker folder is not present then run LiveUpdate from within the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager console. This will make the content available for the Symantec Endpoint Protection client to download.
The following may also resolve this issue:
* Modify the installation of Symantec Endpoint Protection through Add or Remove Programs and uninstall Proactive Threat Protection, then modify it a second time to reinstall it.
* Uninstall both LiveUpdate and Symantec Endpoint Protection, reinstall Live Update, then reinstall Symantec Endpoint Protection.
Who are you online?
Social networking is kind of hazy when business and personal lives intersect online. I tweet and use facebook often and have both personal and business related friends on both. So typically I post jokes comments etc without thinking….so this was the kind of comment that friends or family may toss around and/or respond to it and appreciate the value of it. Then I remembered I have professional contacts on these social networking sites. One woudl assume that the professional contacts understand that when I communicate on that site I am doing so as private person. Therefore, I trust they can separate lame jokes, silly photos and other dopey clutter from the real me. But, is this a safe assumption? Should I censor my private persona? or perhaps create separate accounts? I am sure I am not the only one with this question. So I’l leave it up to you to decide, but with people’s life getting on the internet more then ever before this will continue to remain a concern and source of unwanted trouble if not properly handled.
